What is Brotli extract?
Brotli is a lossless compressed byte-stream format defined in RFC 7932. A .br file normally restores one byte stream; a .tar.br first decompresses to TAR, whose entries can then be listed and extracted. This tool handles both workflows locally in the browser.
How to use this tool
Open a .br or .tar.br file and review the detected contents. A raw .br provides one restored file, while .tar.br can contain multiple files and folders. Extract selected entries or the full structure only after checking names and paths. Use Brotli Create for the reverse operation.
Choosing the right format
Brotli itself does not preserve a hierarchy; TAR does. Therefore a .br decoder cannot reliably recover an original filename, while a valid .tar.br can preserve TAR entry names, directories, and some metadata.
Important limitations
Archive contents are not authenticated or encrypted. Untrusted archives can contain huge expanded data or unsafe paths. Review entries before saving, avoid overwriting important files, and use native sandboxed archive software for large or suspicious input.
Frequently asked questions
Why can another program not open the result?
The extension may not match the bytes. A .tar.br must decode first as Brotli and then as TAR; a raw .br has no TAR directory. Corrupt, truncated, or non-Brotli data cannot be extracted.
